Sponsor a Potcake Dog at the Humane Society of Grand Bahama

The Humane Society of Grand Bahama is a private, non-profit, charitable organization committed to alleviating animal over-population on the island, and further committed to the overall welfare of all animals of Grand Bahama. The majority of the dogs are of mixed breeds, locally referred to as “Potcakes.” This name is derived from a popular dish there, peas and rice. The “cake” that sticks to the bottom of the pot was usually thrown into the yard for the dogs (and in many cases, it still is). Potcakes are an officially recognized breed in the Bahamas!

Potcakes typically have smooth, short fur with little or no undercoat, cocked ears, a hound-like rib cage and long terrier-shaped faces. More rare are the shaggy or rough-coated Potcakes. The “typical” Potcake is brown, but colors range from party (brindle) to black, white, cream, yellow, and red. Adults stand about 24 inches high at the shoulder. Normal adult weight is 25 pounds in the bush, but once healthy and homed, they can weigh 30-45 pounds, depending upon bone structure.

Please consider Sponsoring a dog to help with the expenses for a dog:

Every $ will help the dogs.

We have sponsored Paula. She is waiting for a loving home, and so many others are as well. Please click above and you will be redirected to the HSGB page. Then click the blue sponsor button to help with the funds needed to feed and care for these beautiful animals. We can’t save them all, but we can all try and sponsor one or two until they do find a home. Thanks in advance.

Donations for the Humane Society of Grand Bahama – Support Potcake Rescue

Happy New Year POTCAKErs !!!

2014 is here and we are off and running here at Potcake Collars. My little creation, of tropical dog wear, continues to grow each year. I try and figure out new ways to help our four legged Bahamian friends through this small garage business. The recent addition of the popular new potcake t-shirts will help to promote awareness of the plight of the island dogs and will also help contribute financially to rescue organizations that work tirelessly to save and find homes for potcake dogs in need of help.

The Human Society of Grand Bahama will be the first beneficiary of the proceeds in 2014. A portion of shirts sold between now and April 1st will be donated to HSGB to help with there rescue efforts.

The Humane Society of Grand Bahama was founded in 1968 to provide safe harbour for the island’s homeless and abused animals. We are a private, non-profit charitable organization governed by an active and energetic Board of Directors. We are the only animal welfare organization on the island, which encompasses 530 square miles and has the Bahamas’ second largest urban area (Freeport). The island’s human population is over 50,000.

Peaches the Potcake Update – Adopted

UPDATE

I am happy to report Peaches the potcake has been adopted. She now has a family, thanks to her new owners Misti and Gary, and Peaches now has a sister. Misti and Gary adopted their first potcake just about a year ago. Sapona the potcake is from Bimini. They fell in love with her and when she saw Peaches’ story and pics they could not help but add another potcake to the mix. They now have dogs from Bimini and Grand Bahama to accompany a flock of parrots they have taken in over the years. We are very happy for Peaches and her new family. Misti and Gary are owners and publishers of the Coastal Angler Magazines. Hopefully we will soon see a potcake article in one of their magazines 🙂

Here she is with Sapona.
